I like that saying a lot.

And it was very productive for me to come back to that post right now, so thanks for giving me reason to pay it attention.

It does make sense. What I was trying to get across is that because ego is comprised basically only of our positive feelings about ourselves, the successes we really care about generate a lot of that positive identification. But if that's the case, we have the opportunity to design our egos based on things in which we truly care to take pride. Choosing to feel really good about something new may feel awkward and forced at first, but most things do, particularly in a conscious discipline like shamanism.

Good stuff there.

I'm reminded of one of the sayings of NVC: "Don't just do something--stand there!"

Hm, this confuses me a little. Although maybe you're putting in a piece to what's been missing for me. I've been thinking a lot about where one's ego comes from, and acknowledging one's successes kinda makes sense. But how would that mold the future? By consciously choosing which successes we acknowledge? I guess I can only see that would affect the present, which would also mold the future, but indirectly. Does that make any sense?

I would argue that, given enough time, -nothing- remains on it's original trajectory, and recognizing and accepting that is a step towards shaping where the direction of the next trajectory might lead. Paths fork, branch, dip, split, climb, and twist, whether or not we can anticipate those changes while in the process of walking; and while in the end we might not have a map, at least we can travel with our eyes as open as possible.
